From Astrology In Depth
Hi there Nate. I had a question about the signs of astrology. Specifically, how one synthesizes the images of each sign, and what certain sun signs would act like when combined with certain moon signs and ascendants. I think it's easy to see in practice at times how the moon sign gives a subtle shade to the sun sign, but how can I learn to predict these attributes in people?
Thanks.

- It's not something that is done in the drop of a hat. You'll need to get acquainted with the leading traits of each sign, then you just do a comparison, throwing out the traits of the Sun & Moon that are most contradicted in the chart, and putting special emphasis on traits that blend closely. It's almost like a math thing. Also don't forget to take into consideration Mercury
which is critical in delineating the personality! Venus and Mars can take a bit of a back seat in the delineation, unless they touch some important point like the Ascendant. Lastly, planetary aspects are often crucial as well.
- I am trying to make this website a guideline on how to read charts. If something is missing or could use a boost, please don't hesitate contacting me about it. --Nate 21:37, 18 June 2009 (MDT)
Hi there again, Nate. Thanks for replying to my earlier question. I read the page on Mercury and I believe that you do make a good point in saying that it provides a gateway for how the personality expresses itself. Another factor I think that might be important would be the Moon, since it has long been regarded in occult philosophy to be the gateway between Earth and the Stars. If one takes a look at some of the more formalized disciplines and sects within occultism such as the Golden Dawn, forms of magic are split into Elemental and Astral. Thus we arrive with a common term, the Sub-Lunar Sphere. (You might know this already. I'm just discussing, hehe.) Also, I believe there's a connection with Egyption philosophy with the Moon through the scarab, thought of as an analogy to the gateway to eternal life. I've read that the Moon "transfers" the energies of the other planets, metaphorically speaking. Also, we have other pictures of it being the Mother, the Womb, through which we are birthed into this plane of existence. Sorry about this long tangent. I just thought it was fascinating information.
On your note of recommended amendments to the site, I would like to propose an article on the Lord of Geniture/Nativity. This is a topic which I have heard of from a professional astrologer friend of mine, yet I do not have a clear idea of how it plays out. I'm aware that it is calculated by discerning the essential and accidental dignity of the planets in a chart, mostly from Skyscript.co.uk's explanation. If I could find something pre-digested, practical, I'd be much appreciative. Perhaps something like an LoN description for each planet, haha.

- I've found that Mercury can do even more to impact the personality when there are more aspects on it than on the sun (esp squares). I call it "hyperactive mercury" and it can "convince" the person in directions that are not usually expressed by his sun, and this can sometimes have drastic effects. As for the Moon, I find it reflects influences that ebb and flow within the personality. They are often difficult to see unless you get really close to a person (like family-close). If the moon is very ethically placed then it can stabilise a chart that may otherwise be problematic. Definitely, the moon is a very important consideration in the chart, but one has to understand the complexity of its expression in the personality.
- I've touched on the LoN but did not find it says anything outstanding in my chart and in my family. It involves essential dignities which is more of a traditional astrology thing (which I also did not find exceptionally useful in my analysis). In my delineative work I try to stay focused on really getting the grasp and squeeze as much information from the planetary alignments, rather than use theoretically complex elements, ie midpoints, arabic parts etc. I engaged with each of these in my past but ultimately found they did not meet a workable threshhold, or at least didn't say something I couldn't already say from the planetary alignments. --Nate 18:38, 21 June 2009 (MDT)
